Alaap 01 — An Introduction…

Alaap is a community-based musical initiative built around the songs we grew up with and the memories attached to them — guided listening, singing and shared conversation. There is no training or audition required. The first edition centres on the timeless songs of Rabindranath Tagore.

Why this is a community initiative, not just an evening out

Alaap is developed as a community engagement initiative aligned with Rotary's larger purpose of service and social impact, creating value across three connected areas.

Health & well-being

Music-based community engagement provides a positive environment for emotional expression, relaxation, social connection and mental well-being — an accessible platform where people can pause, connect and participate in a shared experience.

Vocational promotion

It creates opportunities for musicians, facilitators, psychologists, artists, event professionals and other creative practitioners to share their expertise meaningfully — and in the longer term can become a platform for showcasing and supporting creative talent.

Public image & engagement

It gives Rotary a warm, accessible and culturally relevant point of contact — allowing people to experience Rotary's values through participation and giving back, rather than through formal service activities alone.

The #PayItForward model

This anchors the whole initiative: a direct bridge between a community experience and a Rotary service project. Each participant's contribution covers the musical experience, food and a curated participant kit, while also contributing towards Rotary Calcutta Elevates' Mother & Child wellbeing initiative.

Success is measured by the funds generated for service initiatives, the visibility and engagement created for Rotary, and the sustainable mechanism it establishes for ongoing community participation to support identified Rotary service projects.
